I have been approached by an agency that is interested in paying for advertising space on this blog. If I limited the advertising space to a single banner ad or perhaps a link in the occasional post, would this irritate you as a reader?
I would make every effort not to inundate you with links/ads.

I agree with everybody else. Go for it.
I read most of your posts in google reader, so if the ad is on your page I won't see it until I click through. Knock yourself out on selling those ads!
I'm with the advertising agency in question, and I gotta say too: No pop-ups, ever! They should be banned from the web.
Bastinptc, ironically enough I did try to contact you the other day about advertising as well! Perhaps I am, in fact, the "usual spam" to which you refer! :( Check your junk mail folder.
@Matt - I recently added an advertisement to my blog with Marshal. I was paid, so I can vouch for the authenticity.
It wouldn't bother me at all, but thanks for asking. I say go for it.
